TWENTY-SIX

In one of the huge officer’s tents, Phillip Lee sat alone at a round plastic table waiting for another meeting with Lieutenant Wang. In the centre of the table sat a bottle of Kentucky bourbon and four glasses. Around Phillip, a series of desks were placed in rows and another larger table also filled the space. It was a work and meeting room used for individuals and larger groups. Three officers stood around a desk in the shadows of one corner, discussing something important. Phillip heard fragments of the exchange. At least the air was cooler than outside, but only marginally; three large diameter industrial fans spaced evenly around blew warm air, some of which reached Phillip. He leaned his ear towards the men and tried to pick up on the conversation.

“… America. Our allies are not as progressed as we are here. That’s clear,” said the taller officer.

“We can’t allow that to happen.”

“We push harder. How do we ensure that?”

“I think we’re pushing as hard as we can,” Lieutenant Wang said. “We’re making progress.”

“It’s not fast enough.”

“Now’s our chance to prove we are the world’s Superpower. Where our allies are failing, we can succeed.”

The conversation stopped. Phillip glanced over and found them staring at him. One of the officers, Lieutenant Wang, who Phillip was waiting for, walked over and sat at the table beside him.

“That conversation is not for you, Phillip.”

Phillip opened his hands out. “So what conversation is?”

“Sargent Ju reported an incident that recently occurred whereby you interfered with the punishment of a civilian. That’s not what you were employed—”

“Employed?” Phillip laughed. “I’m not employed.”

Wang tipped his head. “Well, we might have to disagree.”

“I thought the level of violence wasn’t warranted. That’s all.”

Wang opened the bottle of liquor and poured two glasses. He took one and pushed the other glass towards Phillip.

“That’s not your decision,” Wang added. Phillip ignored the glass. “Drink.”

Phillip took the glass and sipped. “We need to be careful.” Wang’s forehead creased with interest. “We’re pushing these people. Hard. You push them too hard, and they’ll fight back. I can see it starting to manifest.”

“Have we really treated them that badly?”

Phillip’s eyes widened. “You’re killing innocent people. That’s the quickest way to build resistance. Treat them with some decency and they might go along with it. If not, you’ll piss them off and they will fight back.”

“I’m surprised you think that. They’ve not given much resistance so far. They’re essentially beaten.”

“They’re still out there. This is not the entire town.”

“Some have been killed.” Phillip scowled. “It wasn’t deliberate. We’ve got drones out now searching for more. It won’t be much longer until we have complete control.”

“If they join forces and fight back, we’ll have a big problem on our hands.”

“Our priority right now is to track down and eliminate the ones that are fighting back.”

“That means more patrols. I’d like to come on the next one.”

“We’ll see.”

“I might be able to talk the people into surrender.” Wang laughed. “The fighting might go on for months.”

“I don’t think that’s going to happen.
